The Region takes the first steps to declare Ricote Valley as a World Heritage Site (21/05/2009)

The President of the Autonomous Region of Murcia, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, accompanied by Minister of Public Works and Planning, José Ballesta, today signed an agreement with the mayors of the municipalities of Abarán, Archena, Blanca, Cieza, Ojós , Ricote, Ulea and Villanueva del Río Segura to revitalize the Ricote Valley, as one of the first steps to being declared a World Heritage Site.

The Minister of Public Works and Planning, José Ballesta, stressed that this protocol, signed by Planning and Sustainability Foundation, "states the commitment of the Autonomous Region to promote the Valley of Ricote is declared a Cultural and and achieve the dream that is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. "

The commitment of the regional government focuses on strengthening the conservation of traditional irrigation systems, preventing the disappearance of historic canals and the deterioration of the banks of the River Segura, promoting housing rehabilitation, and aesthetic materials related to architecture popular in the area, improving infrastructure, roads and physiognomy of the people respecting the cultural and popular, as well as promote quality tourism and active involvement of local residents to improve the situation in the Valley.

Two entities, a common interest

Planning and Sustainability Foundation is an agency of the Autonomous Region which aims for the design and development of projects deemed critical to the modernization of the region, always betting on sustainable development.
